Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) is an agricultural university located in Kanke Ranchi, Jharkhand, India. The university was established on June 26, 1981, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) system.after its formal inauguration by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The university was established and named after Birsa Munda, a tribal leader and freedom fighter who fought for the rights of the tribal people in the region.

Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degree programs in various fields of agriculture, veterinary science, and animal husbandry, forestry, and agricultural engineering.
  1. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Agricultural Engineering
  2. Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Agriculture
  3. Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc & AH)
  4. Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc) in various specializations, such as Veterinary Pathology, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management, etc.
  5. Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Agricultural Engineering in various specializations, such as Farm Machinery and Power Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation Engineering.
  6. Master of Science (M.Sc) in Agriculture in various specializations, such as Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Breeding and Genetics, Soil Science, Agricultural Extension.
  7. Ph.D. in Veterinary Science in various specializations, such as Veterinary Pathology, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Production and Management.

Eligibility for admission:

Eligibility for admission in BAU Ranchi are 

Undergraduate Courses:

  1. The candidate must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/ Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

  2. The candidate must appear for the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination (JCECE) conducted by the Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB).

  3. Based on the rank obtained in the JCECE, the candidates are called for counseling and admission to the undergraduate courses at BAU.

Postgraduate Courses:

  1. The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in the relevant field from a recognized university.

  2. The candidate must appear for the entrance examination conducted by the university.

  3. Based on the performance in the entrance examination, the candidates are called for counseling and admission to the postgraduate courses at BAU.

Doctoral Courses:

  1. The candidate must have a Master's degree in the relevant field from a recognized university.

  2. The candidate must appear for the entrance examination conducted by the university.

  3. Based on the performance in the entrance examination and interview, the candidates are called for counseling and admission to the doctoral courses at BAU.

Facilities in BAU Ranchi:

Instrumentation facilities

There is a Central Instrumentation Lab in different Faculties. Instruments are used for curricular research and research conducted under different projects. Some of these sophisticated instruments are: Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Gas Chromatograph, Automatic N Analyzer, Uv- VIS Spectrophotometer, Leaf Area Meter, Chlorophyll meter, Amino Acid Analyzer, Lyophiliser, Pressure Plate Apparatus, Photosynthesis Meter.

Green house, Glass house & Poly house

University has 7 Green houses, 4 glasshouses, 8 poly houses & 2 mist chambers for research, instruction as well as demonstration purposes. Students as well as farmers are trained about entrepreneurship development on protected horticulture technology in these poly houses.

Research Stations and Farms

BAU has established several research stations and farms across the state for conducting research and demonstration of the latest agricultural technologies.

Veterinary Hospital

 The university has a veterinary hospital on the campus for the treatment and diagnosis of animal diseases.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra

BAU has a Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) on the campus which serves as an extension center for disseminating the latest agricultural technologies to farmers in the region.

There is one Technology Park situated in the main campus where the recommended technologies are demonstrated for farmers. Beside there is one four ha integrated Farming System Model for training, demonstration & research purposes.

ATIC (Agriculture Technology Information Centre) is equipped with Kisan Call centre and Birsa Hariyali Community Radio centre to fulfill the queries and requirements of farmers of the state.

Placement:  As per the past records, students placement is approximately 100%  in Government as well as Corporate Sectors and various other leading  private and multi – national companies of India and abroad.
