The Golden Temple

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is a Sikh Gurdwara (place of worship) located in the city of Amritsar, in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab. It is considered the most important religious site for Sikhs around the world and is also a major tourist attraction in India.

The Golden Temple was built in the 16th century by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, and was later expanded and renovated several times by subsequent Sikh Gurus. The temple's most distinctive feature is its golden dome and marble exterior, which gives it its nickname, the Golden Temple.

The temple is built on a platform in the center of a man-made lake, which is also considered holy by Sikhs. The temple complex includes several other buildings, such as the Akal Takht, which is the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority.

The Golden Temple is open to people of all faiths and visitors are required to cover their heads and remove their shoes before entering the temple. The temple also provides free meals, known as langar, to all visitors regardless of their religion, caste or social status.
