The Mahatma Gandhi Setu :

The Mahatma Gandhi Setu Bridge, also known as the Gandhi Setu or Ganga Setu, is a major road bridge in India that spans the River Ganges. It is located in the state of Bihar and connects the capital city, Patna, on the south bank to Hajipur on the north bank. The bridge is an essential transportation link that facilitates the movement of people and goods between these two important cities. Its length is 5,750 metres and it is the third longest river bridge in India. It was inaugrated in May 1982 by the then Prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Here are some key points about the Gandhi Setu Bridge:

  1. Construction: The bridge was constructed to alleviate the transport difficulties between Patna and Hajipur. It was designed by the engineering firm C.S.T. (Cleveland, United States) and was built by the Gammon India Limited company.

  2. Inauguration: The Gandhi Setu Bridge was inaugurated on May 1982, by the then Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It was named after Mahatma Gandhi, the iconic leader of India's independence movement.

  3. Length and Structure: The bridge is one of the longest river bridges in India and has a total length of approximately 5.75 kilometers (3.57 miles), width is 25m and no. of spans are 45. It is a four-lane bridge that provides vital connectivity between the north and south banks of the River Ganges.

  4. Importance: The Gandhi Setu Bridge plays a crucial role in easing traffic congestion on the older bridge, Vikramshila Setu, which is located further downstream. It serves as a significant transportation corridor for both road and rail traffic, contributing to the economic development of the region.

  5. Maintenance: Due to its age and heavy usage, the bridge has undergone several maintenance and repair works over the years to ensure its safety and structural integrity.

  6. Traffic Congestion: Despite being an important infrastructure asset, the Gandhi Setu Bridge has faced issues of traffic congestion and wear over time, partly due to the increasing population and vehicular growth in the region.
